What You Must Know About When It Comes to Sizing Your Bed and Bedding

September 7, 2010

It’s becoming almost a really big problem, that being all the different sizes that are available with bedding and mattresses.   It would probably surprise a lot of people who think that they have a standard size of mattress or bed frame, only to find out that they have a custom or non-traditional size.   And if you’re buying a new mattress or bed frame and you don’t know you have these small differences then the surprise will not be a pleasant one for sure.

The standard sizes of mattresses are twin, full, queen, king, and california king.  More often than not, these sizes are uniform so it’s really easy to get things like bed frames and mattresses… even bedding.   However, things are never as easy as they probably should be and sizes do differ.

The first variation that you really need to know about is called the three quarter bed.  The problem is many times these sizes are sold as queens when they really are not… the size, specifically, is much bigger than a full, but barely smaller than a queen… however it’s small enough.   Major problems and issues can result.  I’ve purchase a queen bed with some amazing luxury bedding, but when it got it home, it didn’t fit into the frame… so make sure you have the right size for sure.

Second you have beds for dorm rooms.  You would think they are a twin, however they are longer by many inches.   And of course you can only imagine how many people show up with bedding that is meant only for a twin bed.  The same with different types of queen beds which can be either longer or wider than a standard queen. As you would imagine, when you’re buying queen bedding or king, or whatever, having it not fit is very frustrating to make sure you know hat you got.

Lastly, you have to know about the depth of the bed.   These days the mattresses have attached pillow tops and they are just so different that they standard 14″ depth has really gone out the window.  This can add up to three inches in length and again cause you hassles. The depth that varies that much can make find the right bed frame a challenge of making great sheets like silk bedding fit properly.

Always make sure, above all, that you measure twice when it comes to your bedding.   You clearly have to go in knowing what you have available to you and what restrictions are there as well.   And you will definitely want to avoid the issues and frustrations that can come with bringing something the wrong size home with you.
